What Is a Quartzite Waterfall Edge?
A waterfall edge carries the countertop over the end of the island and straight down to the floor. Instead of a cabinet end, you see a solid slab of stone. Done right, the vein on the top keeps going around the corner and down the side, as if the island were carved from one block of natural quartzite.
The difference between a good waterfall and a bad one is the mitre. Both pieces are cut at precisely 45 degrees and bonded, so there is no visible edge. We cut every waterfall mitre on our Flow Mach 500 waterjet, which holds that angle along the full length of the joint.
Types of Waterfall Work We Fabricate
One-Side Waterfall
One stone end, usually facing the family room or entry, with the other end finished as a cabinet. It gives most of the visual effect at about half the cost.
Two-Side Waterfall
Both ends of the island in stone. The full block look. Requires the most slab length and the most careful vein planning.
Mitred Waterfall + Full-Height Backsplash
The island waterfall and a full-height backsplash cut from the same bundle, so the kitchen reads as one continuous stone. Price: $3,500-$9,000 on top of the counters.
Vein-Matched Mitres
We cut the side panel from the slab right next to the top piece. That keeps the vein continuous across the mitre. Our Bayview Village client said it best: the vein wraps the corner like one block of stone.
How a Waterfall Comes Together
- Slab plan. We map the top and both drops on the slab so the vein flows toward the edges.
- Floor scribe. The laser template captures floor height at each end so panels sit tight.
- Waterjet mitre. The Flow Mach 500 cuts a 45-degree bevel on the top and each panel.
- Shop dry-fit. The pieces are assembled in the shop to check the vein crossing the joint.
- Install. Floors are protected, the top is set, panels are bonded with Tenax epoxy and clamped with mitre clamps, and steel cantilever supports go in where needed.

Our Yorkville Waterfall Rescue
Last month we finished a $14,200 Taj Mahal bookmatched waterfall island for a condo owner at Yonge and Price after another fabricator mis-templated and cracked their first slab. We re-templated with laser, pulled a replacement block from Stone Tile with a matching vein pattern, mitred the waterfall ends on our Flow Mach 500 and installed in one day. The property manager signed off on the first walkthrough. It still blows our mind when we finish one.
Caring for a Waterfall Island
The top gets normal care: pH-neutral cleaner, cutting boards and trivets. The side panels mostly need a dusting and an occasional wipe where feet and vacuum cleaners touch them. Reseal the top every 18 months; the panels can go longer. For anything custom like curves or extra-deep aprons, see custom quartzite countertops.
