What Makes Cristallo Quartzite Different?
Cristallo is a crystalline quartzite with large, glassy quartz grains and a white to pale grey base. Hold a thin slab up to a work light and you can see the light come through it. That optical translucence is what sets Cristallo apart from every other stone we carry. It is still a true metamorphic sandstone, harder than Taj Mahal at 7.5 Mohs, and it ignores lemon juice and red wine like all real quartzite.
Unlit, Cristallo looks like ice: soft white with glassy veins and pockets of crystal that catch the light from pendants. Lit from behind, it turns warm and glowing. That is why most of our Cristallo work is islands, bar fronts and full-height backsplashes where an LED panel can sit behind the stone.
It is also the most demanding stone we fabricate. Internal fissures that are invisible from the front show up as dark lines once a light goes on. Every Cristallo job starts with a light-table inspection at the yard.
Types of Cristallo Work We Fabricate
Backlit Cristallo Backsplash
A full-height backlit backsplash behind the range or sink turns the wall into a light source. We set the stone over a Clearlight LED light guide plate with an acrylic diffuser and an access hatch for the driver. Usually 2cm slab is used on walls to keep weight down.
Bookmatched Cristallo Waterfall
Two consecutive slabs mirrored across the seam, with mitred waterfall ends cut on the Flow Mach 500. A mitred perimeter apron makes the top look like a solid block. Lit or unlit, it becomes the centre of the room.
Translucent Cristallo Island
An island top with an LED cavity under part or all of the surface. We build a steel and plywood sub-structure that supports the stone while leaving room for the light panel. Seating overhangs are supported with steel flat bar so nothing flexes.
5 Things Toronto Homeowners Get Wrong About Translucent Cristallo
1. “Any white stone will glow.”
Most white stones block light. Marble and onyx pass some light, but they etch. Quartz does not pass light at all because of the resin. Cristallo is one of the few hard, acid-resistant stones that actually glows.
2. “The LED goes right against the stone.”
Put an LED strip directly behind stone and you get bright stripes. A light guide plate with an acrylic diffuser spreads the light evenly. The gap, the panel and the diffuser are planned at templating, not after.
3. “Every Cristallo slab looks the same lit up.”
Two slabs that look identical in the yard can light up completely differently. Thick crystal pockets glow, dense areas stay darker. That is why we inspect over a light before you reserve anything.
4. “You can’t seal translucent stone.”
You can, with an impregnating sealer that sits below the surface. Topical sealers leave a film that shows as cloudy patches when lit, so we never use them on Cristallo.
5. “Electrical can be sorted out later.”
Late electrical is how backlit jobs go over budget. The driver needs a home, the panel needs an access hatch and the circuit needs a switch. We sit down with your electrician before cutting.
Our light-table rule
If a Cristallo slab shows a dark line over our light at the yard, we pass on it. A fissure that is invisible today becomes the first thing everyone sees once the island is lit.
How Much Does Cristallo Quartzite Cost in Toronto?
Cristallo sits at the top of our price list because the slabs cost more, yield is lower and the waterjet work takes longer. Installed Cristallo runs $140-$280/sqft.
| Cristallo Project | Typical Size | Installed Price (CAD) | Lead Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanity top or powder room wall | 12-20 sqft | $2,500-$5,500 | 4 weeks |
| Unlit island top | 28-36 sqft | $4,500-$9,000 | 4-5 weeks |
| Backlit island top | 28-40 sqft | $7,000-$12,500 | 5-6 weeks |
| Backlit full-height backsplash | 30-60 sqft | $6,500-$16,000 | 5-6 weeks |
| Bookmatched waterfall + backlit wall | 90-120 sqft | $25,000-$42,000 | 6-7 weeks |
LED light guide panels, drivers and the electrician are listed separately. Many clients light only the island and use Taj Mahal or Super White on the perimeter, which keeps the total reasonable.
What drives the price:
- Bundle size. Bookmatching needs two or more consecutive slabs from one bundle.
- Yield. Fissured areas are cut away, so Cristallo usually loses more than our standard 32% allowance.
- Waterjet time. Every panel and mitre is waterjet cut.
- Lighting cavity. Building and templating the LED cavity adds labour.

Cristallo vs Taj Mahal: Which Should You Pick?
| Cristallo | Taj Mahal | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $140-$280/sqft | $85-$130/sqft |
| Look | Translucent, crystalline white | Warm cream, gold veins |
| Hardness | 7.5 Mohs | 7 Mohs |
| Best edge | Mitred waterfall | Eased or ogee |
| Backlit | Yes, with Clearlight LED | No |
| Lead time | 4-6 weeks | 2-3 weeks |
| Best for | Signature islands and walls | Luxury value kitchens |
In our opinion, Cristallo earns its price when it is lit or when it is the single feature in a quiet room. For a whole-kitchen perimeter, Taj Mahal gives you more for less.
Recent Cristallo Projects
Our biggest Cristallo job so far was a Forest Hill custom new-build: 112 sqft of backlit Cristallo across the island and a full-height backsplash, set against dark walnut cabinetry. It took 7 weeks and came in at $42,000. The light panels sit behind removable hatches in the cabinetry so the electrician can reach the drivers.
In Lawrence Park we did a backlit Cristallo bar front in a basement lounge. The trickiest part was coordinating the panel cut-outs with the homeowner’s electrician, which we sorted out at templating so nothing had to be recut. It still blows our mind when we finish one and switch the light on for the first time.
Living With Cristallo
Wipe with warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner, then dry with microfibre so streaks do not show when the light is on. Use trivets for cast iron as a habit, even though the stone handles heat past 300C. Reseal every 18 months with an impregnating sealer, and book our quartzite sealing team if you would rather not do it yourself.
