Quartzite vs Marble in Toronto, ON | Etching, Hardness, Sealing & Slab Price

Quartzite Countertops Toronto handles the quartzite vs marble question for kitchens, condos and commercial builds in Toronto and the GTA. Quartzite is a metamorphic sandstone at 7 Mohs and acid-resistant; marble is calcite-based at 3-5 Mohs and etches from lemon or red wine in seconds. We fabricate quartzite on our Park Industries CNC bridge saw and Flow Mach 500 waterjet with slabs from Stone Tile, Ciot and Marsala, and in 22 years we have restored more etched marble than we can count.

Quartzite runs $70-$280/sqft installed, while Carrara marble runs $120-$400/sqft. Taj Mahal, Cristallo, Mont Blanc, Sea Pearl and Super White are in stock. Every quartzite install carries WSIB coverage, $5M CGL, NSI compliance and a written 2-year warranty across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham and the rest of the GTA.

Quartzite vs Marble: Which Survives Red Wine?

The short answer is quartzite. Marble is made of calcite, a mineral that reacts with acid. Lemon juice, vinegar, red wine, tomato sauce and even some cleaners leave a dull, rough spot called an etch, often within seconds. Quartzite is made of quartz grains fused together by heat and pressure, and quartz does not react with household acids. You can squeeze a lemon on it, wipe it off and see nothing.

The longer answer is about how you live. Marble is softer, around 3 to 5 on the Mohs scale, and it develops a patina of etches and scratches. Some people love that. Quartzite, around 7 Mohs, stays looking new. Most of our clients who come in asking for Calacatta leave with a white quartzite that gives them the look without the worry.

How the Two Compare in a Real Kitchen

Acid Etching

Marble etches; sealing does not prevent it because the acid reacts with the stone itself, not the pores. Quartzite does not etch.

Hardness

Quartzite resists knife scratches and edge chips far better. Marble scratches from grit on the bottom of a pot.

Sealing Schedule

Marble about every 6 months, quartzite every 18 months.

Slab Price Comparison

Carrara marble runs $120-$400/sqft and Calacatta higher. Quartzite spans $70-$280/sqft.

Which Quartzites Give You the Marble Look?

The catch with white stones is mislabelling. Some “quartzites” are dolomite and will etch, so we lemon-test and glass-scratch every white lot at the yard. It still blows our mind how often homeowners inherit a chipped marble install from a weekend fabricator and only discover the acid-etch damage after the first glass of red wine.

When Marble Still Makes Sense

Marble is lovely in places that do not see acid: a fireplace surround, a powder room vanity, a bathroom floor, a baking slab that you are happy to let age. If you already have marble you love, our quartzite polishing and restoration team also hones and re-polishes marble, removing etches so it looks fresh again.

Switching From Marble to Quartzite

If you are replacing etched marble, the process is the same as any kitchen. We laser template over the old tops, remove them on install day, check the cabinets and set your quartzite in one visit. The difference shows up the first time somebody spills sangria. For more comparisons, see quartzite vs quartz and quartzite vs granite.

Straight Talk

What Actually Stops Toronto Homeowners From Booking Quartzite vs Marble

In our opinion, these four questions decide most bookings. Here are the straight answers.

"Marble is the classic. Isn't quartzite a compromise?"

In our opinion, white quartzite is the look of marble without the compromise. If you love the patina of etched marble, like in old European bakeries, go marble. If you want it to look new in ten years, go quartzite.

"Would a marble-look quartz be easier?"

Quartz never etches, but it scorches near 150C and the printed veins repeat. Quartzite gives real marble-like veining and handles heat.

"Doesn't quartzite chip as easily as marble?"

No. Marble is 3-5 Mohs and quartzite about 7. Quartzite resists scratches and chips far better, especially with eased edges cut on a flooded CNC.

"Isn't sealing just as much work either way?"

Marble wants sealing every 6 months and still etches when sealed, because sealer does not stop acids reacting with calcite. Quartzite gets sealed every 18 months and does not etch.

Precision Workflow

How Our Quartzite vs Marble Process Works, 5 Steps

  1. Step 1: Marble-Look Slab Hand-Selection

At Stone Tile, Ciot or Marsala we show you quartzites that read like Calacatta and Carrara, then etch-test the lot so you know it really is quartzite and not a dolomite.

  2. Step 2: Digital Laser Templating

Our LT-2D3D laser templater captures your layout to 1/16 inch. We plan vein placement so the most marble-like movement lands where you see it most.

  3. Step 3: Park Industries CNC & Waterjet Cutting

Fabricators used to cutting soft marble sometimes push quartzite too fast and dry, which leaves hairline cracks. Our flooded diamond CNC and Flow Mach 500 waterjet keep the stone cool.

  4. Step 4: Hand-Polishing & Sealing by Marco

Marco Delvecchio checks vein matching at every seam before the Marmo Meccanica polish, then the stone gets a Dry-Treat Stain-Proof impregnating seal.

  5. Step 5: Clean 1-Day GTA Installation

A WSIB-cleared crew installs in one visit with white-tinted Akemi epoxy. If you are replacing marble, removal is on its own line.

Got Questions?

Quartzite vs Marble FAQ

Does quartzite etch like marble?

No. Real quartzite is made of fused quartz grains and does not react with acids. Marble is made of calcite, which reacts with lemon, vinegar, wine and tomato sauce and leaves a dull mark called an etch. Sealing marble slows staining but does not stop etching. That single difference is why most of our marble-loving clients end up in white quartzite.

Is quartzite cheaper than marble in Toronto?

Usually. Quartzite runs $70-$280/sqft installed. Carrara marble runs $120-$400/sqft, and Calacatta higher still. On a 60 sqft kitchen, entry quartzite lands at $5,500-$9,800 versus $7,000-$14,000 for marble.

How much harder is quartzite than marble?

Quartzite rates about 7 on the Mohs scale. Marble rates 3-5. A steel knife can scratch marble; it will not scratch quartzite.

Which quartzites look most like marble?

White quartzites with grey veining read like Calacatta and Carrara. Super White has a softer, smoky marble look. Taj Mahal reads like a warm cream marble.

Can etched marble be repaired?

Yes. We hone and re-polish etched marble in place, using oxalic acid polishing compounds on light etches and diamond pads on deeper ones. Expect it to etch again with use.

How often is marble sealed vs quartzite?

Marble roughly every 6 months, quartzite every 18 months. Even sealed marble etches.

Is marble ever the right choice?

In a powder room, on a fireplace surround or for someone who loves patina, yes. For a working kitchen, we recommend quartzite.

How do I know a quartzite is not actually marble?

Lemon test and glass scratch test. Marble and dolomite etch and do not scratch glass. We test every white lot before you buy.

Can you match the marble in the rest of my house?

We bring white quartzite samples with similar veining. It will not be identical, but it can sit comfortably beside marble floors or a marble fireplace.
