Why Quartzite Needs Sealing
Quartzite is tough. It is a metamorphic sandstone around 7 on the Mohs scale, it handles heat past 300C and it does not etch from lemon or wine. But it is still natural stone with microscopic pores. Leave olive oil, coffee or red wine sitting on an unsealed counter and some of it can soak in and leave a shadow.
A good seal fixes that. We use Dry-Treat Stain-Proof, a fluoropolymer impregnating sealer that soaks into the stone and creates a breathable barrier below the surface. It is hydrophobic and oleophobic, which means water and oil both bead up instead of soaking in, and it does not change how the stone looks or feels.
Types of Sealing We Offer
18-Month Impregnating Seal
Our standard reseal visit. Deep clean, Dry-Treat Stain-Proof application, buff and test. Good for about 18 months.
Factory Seal
Every piece fabricated in our Vaughan shop gets sealed before it leaves, then again on install day.
Topical Seal
A surface coating we use only on specific outdoor or commercial surfaces where a sacrificial film makes sense. We do not use topical sealers on indoor kitchen quartzite.
Colour-Deepening Seal
An impregnating sealer with an enhancer that makes stone look richer and darker. Popular on leathered grey, Fantasy Brown and charcoal quartzite. We always test a small area first.
5 Signs Your Quartzite Needs Resealing (18-Month Cycle Explained)
1. Water Darkens the Stone
The classic test. Drops near the sink should bead. If the stone goes dark under them within ten minutes, the seal is worn.
2. Oil Leaves a Shadow
A drip of cooking oil that leaves a faint darker patch after wiping means oil is getting in.
3. The Sink Edge Looks Duller
The area around the sink gets the most water and scrubbing, so it wears first.
4. It Has Been 18 Months
Even if everything looks fine, 18 months is the right time to test and likely reseal, especially on leathered or honed finishes.
5. You Have Been Using Harsh Cleaners
Bleach, vinegar and degreasers do not etch quartzite but they do break down sealer faster. If those have been in use, reseal sooner.
The 18-month cycle
Month 0: factory seal plus on-site seal. Month 12: quick water-drop test near the sink. Month 18: reseal. Repeat. Busy kitchens and leathered finishes may move the reseal to month 12-15.

Sealing Stone We Didn’t Install
We reseal any quartzite in the GTA, along with granite and marble. If we test your “quartzite” and find it is actually marble or dolomite, we will tell you, since those need sealing every six months and still etch. Our quartzite vs marble page explains the difference.
Between Visits
Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, wipe oil and coffee promptly and run the water-drop test once a year. Our quartzite maintenance and care page covers daily routines. If you see dull spots, chips or stains that will not lift, book quartzite polishing and restoration and we can often do both on one visit.
