Grey Quartzite, From Dove to Charcoal
Grey quartzite is not one stone. It is a family of quartzites that land somewhere between soft dove grey and deep charcoal, sometimes with white, silver or even faint gold veining. What they share is the stuff that matters in a kitchen: each is a metamorphic sandstone around 7 Mohs, each resists acid etching and each handles heat far better than engineered quartz.
Grey is also the colour clients struggle with most. It shifts under different light, it can lean blue, green or warm, and the finish changes how it behaves day to day. This page is built to help you pick the right grey and the right finish the first time.
Types of Grey Quartzite Work We Fabricate
Light Grey Quartzite
Dove and pale silver greys that keep a kitchen bright. They suit white shaker cabinets, small condos and older homes where you do not want the counters to feel heavy.
Charcoal and Dark Grey Quartzite
Deep greys that ground a room and make stainless appliances look built in. We usually steer clients to leathered or honed on these to keep water spots under control.
Leathered Grey Islands
Our most popular grey job. A leathered charcoal island with light wood stools is a look that has stayed in demand for years, and the texture hides everyday marks.
Grey Vanity Tops
Mid greys work beautifully in bathrooms with white sinks and black or brushed fixtures. Offcuts from a kitchen slab often cover a vanity.
Polished vs Honed vs Leathered on Grey
| Polished | Honed | Leathered | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Reflective, deep colour | Matte, flat | Textured, soft sheen |
| Water spots | Visible on dark greys | Fewer | Hidden |
| Fingerprints | Yes | No | No |
| Scratches | More visible | Less visible | Least visible |
| Upcharge | Baseline | +$8/sqft | +$12/sqft |
| Best grey | Light dove | Mid grey | Charcoal |
In our opinion, picking the wrong finish on a dark grey costs more than picking a slightly more expensive stone. A polished charcoal island looks stunning in photos and shows every glass ring in real life.
How Much Do Grey Quartzite Countertops Cost in Toronto?
Installed grey quartzite runs $70-$110/sqft.
| Grey Quartzite Project | Typical Size | Installed Price (CAD) | Lead Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanity top | 12-20 sqft | $1,800-$2,600 | 1-2 weeks |
| Kitchen island | 28-36 sqft | $2,800-$4,600 | 2 weeks |
| L-shape kitchen | 45-55 sqft | $5,500-$7,800 | 2 weeks |
| Open kitchen with island | 65-85 sqft | $9,500-$13,000 | 2-3 weeks |
| Whole-house package (kitchen, spice kitchen, vanities) | 90-130 sqft | $12,000-$18,000 | 3-4 weeks |
Whole-house packages get cheaper per square foot because we nest every piece across shared slabs. A Castlemore client got a main kitchen, a spice kitchen and three vanities out of four slabs instead of five. Full rate tables are on quartzite cost Toronto.
Grey Quartzite vs Other Cool Stones
If you like grey but want more movement, Fantasy Brown quartzite adds warm brown banding. If you want white-grey with linear veins, see Mont Blanc quartzite. If you want a light, marble-like look, go to white quartzite countertops.
Tips for Choosing a Grey
- Look in daylight. Yard lighting is often cool and makes greys look bluer than they will in your kitchen.
- Bring a cabinet door. Grey changes next to wood, paint and metal.
- Pick the finish before the slab. The same grey looks lighter honed and darker polished.
- Think about your sink wall. Water spots are worst near the sink, so that run decides the finish.
- Check the lot number. Grey lots vary. We note it on your quote so the slab you approved is the one we cut.
Caring for Grey Quartzite
Wipe daily with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner, then dry with microfibre on polished dark greys to prevent spots. Reseal about every 18 months. If you want the grey a shade richer, ask about a colour-deepening seal when you book a quartzite sealing visit.
