Quartzite Countertops Toronto

[/ →](/)

handles the quartzite vs quartz question for kitchens, condos and commercial builds in Toronto and the GTA every week. Quartzite is a natural metamorphic sandstone at 7-7.5 Mohs, acid-resistant and heat-rated past 300C. Quartz is engineered from roughly 93% ground quartz and 7% resin. We fabricate natural quartzite on our Park Industries CNC bridge saw and Flow Mach 500 waterjet with slabs from Stone Tile, Ciot and Marsala, and after 22 years we will tell you honestly when quartz is the better fit.

Quartzite runs $70-$280/sqft installed versus about $55-$120/sqft for engineered quartz. Taj Mahal, Cristallo, Mont Blanc, Sea Pearl and Super White are in stock. Every quartzite install carries WSIB coverage, $5M CGL, NSI compliance and a written 2-year warranty across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham and the rest of the GTA.

## Quartzite vs Quartz: The Short Answer

**Quartzite** is natural stone. It started as sandstone and was fused by heat and pressure into a dense metamorphic rock that rates 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. It is cut from the earth in slabs, every slab is unique, it tolerates heat past 300C and it never yellows.

**Quartz** is engineered. Manufacturers grind natural quartz, then bind about 93% quartz with roughly 7% polyester resin and pigments. The result is uniform, non-porous and needs no sealing, but the resin can scorch near 150C and yellow in sunlight.

The names sound alike, which is exactly why so many GTA homeowners walk out of a showroom thinking they bought stone when they bought an engineered product. Retail staff conflate the two all the time.

## How We Compare Them for Your Kitchen

### Heat and UV Comparison

This is the biggest practical difference. Quartzite handles a hot pot set down for a moment. Quartz can get a permanent brown ring. Near big windows, white quartz can drift toward cream over a few years. Quartzite stays put.

### Sealing and Care Comparison

Quartz needs no sealing. Quartzite gets an impregnating seal every 18 months. Daily cleaning is the same for both: warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner.

### 60 sqft Kitchen Price Comparison

We quote your actual layout in both materials so you see the real difference rather than a rule of thumb.

### Who Each Material Suits

Quartzite suits homeowners staying put, cooks who use the counter hard and anyone who wants real stone. Quartz suits rentals, flips and people who want zero maintenance and perfectly even colour.

| 60 sqft kitchen | $5,500-$9,800 (entry stones) | $4,500-$8,200 | $7,000-$14,000 |
| Mohs hardness | 7-7.5 | 7 (binder softer) | 3-5 |
| Acid etch | Inert | Inert | Etches instantly |
| Heat | 300C+ | Around 150C, can yellow | 300C+ |
| UV-stable | Yes | No, can yellow | Yes |
| Pattern | Natural, unique | Uniform, engineered | Natural |
| Sealing | Every 18 months | Never | Every 6 months |
| Best for | Natural stone that performs like engineered | Renters and flips | Heritage marble lovers |

## How Much Does Quartzite Cost Compared to Quartz in Toronto?

Here is where the entry-level quartzites sit against typical quartz pricing on common layouts.

| Layout | Entry Quartzite (Fantasy Brown, Mont Blanc, Grey) | Engineered Quartz |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Vanity top | $1,800-$2,400 | $1,200-$2,000 |
| Kitchen island | $2,800-$4,600 | $2,000-$3,800 |
| L-shape kitchen (45-55 sqft) | $5,500-$7,800 | $4,200-$6,800 |
| Open kitchen with island (65-85 sqft) | $9,500-$13,000 | $7,000-$11,000 |

The gap at the entry level is smaller than most people expect. Premium quartzites like

Taj Mahal

 and

Cristallo

[/cristallo-quartzite/ →](/cristallo-quartzite/)

cost more, but they also look like nothing quartz can copy. Our full tables are on

## Cheap Quartz Sold as Quartzite

In our opinion, cheap big-box quartz sold as quartzite is like a Halloween-store suit: fine for one dinner party, embarrassing by the holidays. We regularly meet homeowners who were told they were buying “quartzite” and ended up with a resin product. Here is how to check:

- **Ask about resin.** If the product contains resin, it is quartz.
- **Look at the pattern.** Quartz patterns repeat. Natural quartzite never does.
- **Ask for the slab lot number.** Real stone comes in numbered slabs from a specific block.
- **Look at the edge.** Natural stone shows the veining through the full thickness.

## When Quartz Is the Better Choice

We would rather lose a job than sell the wrong material. Quartz makes sense when the kitchen is in a rental unit, when you are flipping a house within a year or two, or when you want a perfectly plain solid colour that no natural stone offers. If none of those apply, quartzite usually wins over the life of the kitchen.

## Living With Quartzite After Quartz

Clients switching from quartz mostly notice two things. First, they stop worrying about hot pans. Second, they need to remember to reseal every 18 months, which takes about an hour or a quick

quartzite sealing

[/quartzite-sealing/ →](/quartzite-sealing/)

visit. Everything else, daily wiping, cutting boards, pH-neutral cleaner, stays the same.

Straight Talk

## What Actually Stops Toronto Homeowners From Booking Quartzite vs Quartz

In our opinion, these four questions decide most bookings. Here are the straight answers.

### "Quartzite costs more. Is it worth it over quartz?"

In our opinion, on a kitchen you plan to keep, yes. The gap on a 60 sqft kitchen is often under $1,500 at the entry level. For that you get real stone, heat resistance past 300C and no resin to yellow. On a rental or a flip, quartz can make sense, and we will say so.

### "Isn't quartz the same thing with a shorter name?"

No, and this is the most common mix-up we hear. Quartz is engineered: crushed quartz bound with polyester resin. Quartzite is solid natural stone. Showroom staff use the words loosely, which is how a lot of people end up with a resin product they thought was stone.

### "Doesn't natural stone chip more than quartz?"

Both can chip on a sharp corner. Quartzite at 7 Mohs is as hard as quartz's quartz content, and harder than its resin binder. Chips on quartzite are repairable with colour-matched resin for $185-$450.

### "Quartz never needs sealing. Isn't that the deciding factor?"

Sealing quartzite takes under an hour every 18 months, or a $350-$950 visit if you would rather we do it. That is the trade for heat and UV resistance. Most clients decide it is an easy trade.

Got Questions?

## Quartzite vs Quartz FAQ

### Is quartzite better than quartz?

For heat, UV and natural looks, yes. Quartzite is natural metamorphic sandstone at 7-7.5 Mohs that handles 300C+ and never yellows. Quartz is about 93% ground quartz and 7% resin; the resin can scorch near 150C and yellow in direct sun. Quartz wins on zero sealing and perfectly uniform colour. For a kitchen you will keep, most clients choose quartzite. For a rental or flip, quartz can be the smarter spend.

### How much more does quartzite cost than quartz in Toronto?

Quartzite runs $70-$280/sqft installed and quartz about $55-$120/sqft. On a 60 sqft kitchen, entry quartzite like Fantasy Brown or Mont Blanc lands at $5,500-$9,800 versus $4,500-$8,200 for quartz. Premium stones like Cristallo are well above any quartz.

### Can I put a hot pan on quartz?

Not safely. The resin binder can scorch or yellow around 150C. You can briefly set a hot pan on quartzite, which handles 300C+, though trivets are still a good habit.

### Does quartz yellow in sunlight?

It can, especially white quartz near south and west windows. The resin is not UV-stable. Quartzite has no resin, so it stays the same colour indoors and out.

### Does quartzite need sealing and quartz doesn't?

Correct. Quartzite needs an impregnating seal every 18 months. Quartz is non-porous and needs no sealing. That is the main maintenance trade-off.

### Which is harder, quartz or quartzite?

The quartz grains in both are about 7 Mohs, but quartz's resin binder is much softer. Overall, quartzite is the harder, more heat-tolerant surface.

### Can quartz go outdoors?

We do not recommend it; UV breaks down the resin. Quartzite works outdoors with sealing and a draining support frame.

### Why do showrooms mix up quartz and quartzite?

The names sound alike and some staff use them interchangeably. Ask whether the product contains resin. If it does, it is quartz.

### Do you install quartz?

Our shop specialises in natural quartzite. We will advise honestly if quartz suits a project better, and we can point you to fabricators who focus on engineered stone.
